Newall, in West Yorkshire, was historically part of the township of Newall with Clifton in Otley. It lies on the north bank of the River Wharfe, across Otley Bridge from the town of Otley. Racing took place in Wharfedale at a number of different venues from 1845 until 1874, but on Monday 5th April 1847 the races were staged on the eastern side of Newall, just a mile from Otley. The opening Sweepstakes was won by Mr Thornber’s Fanny Grey who beat Miss Side and Redeemer. The concluding Sweepstakes went to Mr Scriven’s The Hero. The next year races were staged on a different track nearer to Otley. |
